The Shadow Queen then tells him that "[he] would do well to learn [his] place", stating that she takes orders from no one.
After the second strike to Grodus' head, the Shadow Sirens replacing Doopliss appeared. As it turns out, Beldam was the true mastermind behind the events that took place in the game.
She revealed that she was the one who spread the rumor of an ancient treasure that rested behind the Thousand-Year Door, in hopes that someone would find the seven Crystals Stars and break the seal.
She had also manipulated Grodus and his organization by telling him a lie, stating that the Shadow Queen would obey the orders of whoever awakened her.
After the Shadow Queen congratulates the Shadow Sirens for their work, she offers Mario and company a chance to join her. They, of course, refuse the offer, and engage her in combat.
Mario and his allies won the first round, but when round two began, the Shadow Queen revealed her true form, becoming invincible in the process.

February Queen of Hearts Disney. Upon death, however, the queen curses the warriors, forcing them to take precautionary measures. After a thousand years, Beldam enacts a plan to revive her through manipulation of the X-Nauts , who kidnap Princess Peach , setting off the events of the game.
Mario and his friends collect all seven Crystal Stars, defeat most of the X-Nauts, and pursue Grodus to the Palace of Shadow in order to stop the plot once and for all.
Unfortunately, Grodus is able to summon the Shadow Queen and presents Peach as a vessel for her to possess. Now reborn, the Shadow Queen prepares to enact her vengeance, and soon nearly destroys Grodus for thinking he could control her.
The Shadow Queen then notices Mario and his friends and offers them the position of her servants. If Mario agrees, the Shadow Queen will engulf the world with her foul magic, resulting in a Game Over for Mario, for Peach, and for the world.
When Mario refuses, the Shadow Queen attacks him and his friends, intending to put them in their place, but finds that Princess Peach's body is impeding her power.
The Shadow Queen assumes her real form, and for a time becomes impervious to Mario and his friends' attacks.
However, the Crystal Stars manage to travel to their home locations, allowing the people of each area to communicate with Mario.
The goodwill and wishes of people the world over are enough to suppress the Shadow Queen's possession of Princess Peach; she regains control of her body long enough to give Mario all her remaining power.
Restored, Mario and his partners battle against the Shadow Queen once again; they are able to defeat and seal her away forever, and Peach regains control of her own body once again.
As with most characters in the manga, she displays more of a comic side. Her connection to the Shadow Sirens is given an indirect reference in her unlock requirements, which requires Vivian's spirit to be summoned alongside a Gengar spirit core.
The Shadow Queen is an immortal demon, having survived for a full thousand years while being sealed in the Palace of Shadow.
She can also possess other people, and has a variety of magic at her disposal, which she uses to create powerful creatures and objects such as the three dragons and the Crystal Stars.
However, her vessel may be able to suppress or co-opt her influence temporarily if they possess particularly strong willpower.
In battle, while in her true form she is immune to normal and defense-piercing attacks, and can only be made vulnerable with the power of the Crystal Stars.
She is able to use her hands to drain the health of her enemies and pierce their defenses; they are also capable of smashing opponents to the ground, and are considered separate enemies that can be targeted individually.
When the hands defeated, the Shadow Queen can revive them the following turn. The Shadow Queen is also able to strike her opponents with lightning that pierces her target's defenses.
She needed to be developed more in this way. Lastly, the story got more interesting about half way through the book.
That is why I finished it. May 17, Jet Silver rated it liked it Shelves: female-author , fantasy , , fiction. I'm not sure what I thought of this.
The main character had an original and compelling voice, but on the other hand, all of the characters behaved erractically. I couldn't work out anyone's goals or motivations, and that made for an unsatisfying read.
I didn't feel I knew who any of these people were by the end of the book, which makes it rather difficult to care what happens to them.
Feb 13, Jessica Smith rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Fantasy lovers, people seeking believeable main characters.
Shelves: books-worth-your-time , kick-ass-heroines. Loved this book. I think this is the first time I've read about a strong woman, a truly believable character who possesses flaws , and overcomes them despite everything.
Characters like Matilde have become far too rare. Matilde, heir to the House of Svanaten, is nineteen, of age and more than ready to take her place on the throne but her regent grandmother is unwilling to hand over the reins.
But it is not as simple as a desire for power. Matilde has visions of the future and her grandmother's skill at hiding this is all that keeps her granddaughter from being claimed by the church and losing her throne forever.
When her long estranged aunt arrives with her young son for a festival, Matilde is delighted until a Matilde, heir to the House of Svanaten, is nineteen, of age and more than ready to take her place on the throne but her regent grandmother is unwilling to hand over the reins.
When her long estranged aunt arrives with her young son for a festival, Matilde is delighted until a moment of prescience comes too late and she loses family, friends and throne in one horrific attack.
Alone, desperate to survive and eventually regain her throne, she agrees to be bound in marriage to the man who has wiped out her family. Her new husband, though, wants more than a wife and uses magic to secure her loyalty.
Matilde finds herself despised by those she cares about as she struggles to subtly undermine her conqueror. Shadow Queen is in many ways a coming of age story.
Tilde may be restlessly wanting her throne at the beginning of the novel but she is also immature and naive and her prescience is potentially dangerous to both her and her throne.
When her whole world is destroyed she is forced to grow up fast and, although she makes mistakes - and there are many of them - she learns quickly that he new husband's ruthlessness must be matched by her own.
The author keeps a tight grip on a complex story of politics and psychological manipulation that reveals itself slowly as Tilde learns more about herself, her family and her kingdom and its enemies.
The characters are well-drawn with a blend of strengths and weaknesses and, often, surprising sides to them.
As it should be, no-one is perfect in this world where betrayal is commonplace. Shadow Queen is gritty fantasy set in a realistic quasi mediaeval world and should appeal to those who enjoy novels by Jennifer Fallon and Glenda Larke.
There are no elves, fairies or vampires but there is magic - and it's powerful, dark and dangerous. Oct 16, Jennifer rated it liked it. First thing that struck me was a problem with the cover art and banners obviously two artists and one wasn't paying attention.
It was an easy, not unenjoyable read, but I disliked her mis treatment of the golem legend and the description of the people who use such said arts.
I don't enjoy books where the heroine falls in love with her captive, even if it's through dark arts, and that point bothered me.
Things were let poorly explained if explained at all and the division among the tribes left First thing that struck me was a problem with the cover art and banners obviously two artists and one wasn't paying attention.
Things were let poorly explained if explained at all and the division among the tribes left me politically confused. Still, the first chapter was a gripping one.
Not sure I'll bother with the second book. Jul 31, Trina rated it really liked it. An easy to read, engaging story that is not bogged down in excessive description.
Relatable characters and an interesting plot; something difficult in a highly competitive genre. I love reading Australian authors, especially when their writing is clean and neat.
I look forward to seeing Kalin's work in the future. I have moved on to volume two, 'Shadow Queen'. Oct 12, Smita Jha rated it liked it.
I kept reading and turning pages. Back story and world made sense and was believable. Matilde herself was unsure and uncertain which matched her age and her situation, but sometimes made you wish she'd get a backbone.
I liked the book enough that I'm willing to keep reading. Mar 08, Paula rated it liked it Recommends it for: young adult fantasy readers.
